Marilyn Conley
We were saddened to learn of the death, in June 2009, of Marilyn Thompson Conley (formerly Nickson/Goodwin, née Fisher). Marilyn had been a good friend to EARTH in its early years, and it was a great encouragement to us to learn that her family had decided to make donations to this charity in her memory. To date the sum of £651 has been received, and we are most grateful for this support.
Isle of Ely Rowing Club
The Isle of Ely Rowing Club was born out of the Diamond44 celebrations in February 2004 which marked the 60th anniversary of the 1944 University Boat Race rowed at Ely. It has built itself up using support and donated equipment from other clubs and the local community; and by the efforts of members and friends. However, much of their equipment is beginning to show the effects of time.
The Challenge was to raise £4000 towards the club development fund by rowing 80kms on the longest day. The challenge started at 6 am on Saturday June 21st and the aim for the16 men and women members, of all ages and standards, was to row at least one of the legs Ely-Denver, Denver-Ely, Ely-Bottisham & Bottisham-Ely.
Rather than just raising funds for their own club, they wanted to support a local charity by donating 50% of all sponsorship raised to EARTH. As a result, the sum of £2,085.72 (including tax reclaimed on gift-aided sponsorships) has been donated towards enhancements to our workroom accommodation.
The fleet of boats comprised 2 pairs, 1 quadruple-scull, 2 single sculls and an eight. Interestingly, the eight was named "Terry O II", in recognition of the part played by our commttee member Terry Overall in organising the Diamond44 celebrations in 2004.
Please see http://photosbyderek.photos.de.com/c1533128.html for some photos of the event.
Thank you very much from all at EARTH for your fantastic efforts! (We hope you didn't ache too much!)
